The Third International Social Role Valorization Conference, was held June 4 to 7th, 2003 in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. The conference theme was Leadership and Change: Renewing the SRV Movement, Connections and Challenges.

It was an honor to hold the third International Role Valorization Conference at the University of Calgary, Calgary Alberta Canada, June 4 to 7th, 2003. The conference theme was: Leadership and Change: renewing the SRV Movement-- Connections and Challenges.

For over 25 years, Normalization and subsequently Social Role Valorization (SRV) have been important, even dominant forces in shaping human service ideologies and models and public attitudes towards people with disabilities and other groups of people who have been marginalized. Two previous international conferences have been held to bring together professionals, academics, family members and people with disabilities to explore research, teaching and application of Social Role Valorization in the lives of vulnerable people. The Calgary conference was a unique opportunity for over two hundred people from all walks of life and other countries to come together to examine and apply the principles of Social Role Valorization theory in ways that might improve the lives of vulnerable and marginalized persons and groups.

This special issue of the International Journal of Community, Disability and Rehabilitation offers twelve of the presentations given by participants from various countries. The papers that follow the addresses by two distinguished Canadians, Peter Park and Paul Young, founders of People First Canada, provide perspectives on a wide range of issues associated with the application of SRV theory including services in relation to older people; the development of social policy and professional services; the development of secure units; the creation of inclusive post-secondary opportunities; as well as the relevance of SRV theory in developing other emancipatory practices and planning processes for families. The papers focus on very specific questions and issues of SRV theory and implementation as well as providing experiences that are broader in scope, in hopes that the issue will stimulate further discussion and help to those interested in the issues.
