Disability Management: An Assessment of Psychosocial Factors and Early Intervention

Abstract

Within the field of disability management, the concept of early intervention has gained an increasing amount of attention as a crucial factor in assisting employees to either remain at work or return to work following an absence. The implementation of early intervention, however, is not enough to create a successful outcome for individuals experiencing a work absence due to illness or injury. The psychosocial issues which influence a person with a disability must also be addressed in order to create a successful return to work outcome, and to prevent the disability from becoming prolonged and difficult. A review of the relevant literature, in addition to an outline of two case study examples demonstrate the considerable differences in return to work outcomes when psychosocial issues are addressed or not. The implementation of case management is identified as an effective tool for the management of return to work outcomes within disability management.
