Disabled People and Professionals: A Call for Collaboration at the Grassroots Level
by Claudia Dube
This paper examines the possibility of collaboration between disabled people and professionals towards social change. The social views of both groups and the reality lived by individuals within these groups are explored through a constructivist analysis. The paper argues that an alliance could be considered between the two groups because of the compatible aspirations of disabled people as service users and front-line professionals as service providers and their shared common feeling of powerlessness in attaining them. Despite being a challenging alliance to picture, the benefits that it entails justify the need to search for strategies to optimize its success. The strategies recommended in this paper include: framing of a common vision, reframing group construct, increasing contextual awareness and encouraging a feedback loop between theory and practice
