Substance Abuse Identification and Treatment Among Individuals with a Traumatic Brain Injury in Vocational Rehabilitation Services

by Anna M. Harpster, MS, University of Iowa

It is estimated that between one third and one half of individuals diagnosed with brain injury were intoxicated at the time of injury (Corrigan, 1995) and a significant proportion have been reported to resume the abuse of substances post injury. The rate of identified and treated substance abuse documented in the case files of consumers who have a TBI and participate in Vocational Rehabilitation Services (VRS) was examined. It was found that substance abuse was recorded as a problem for 7% of consumers with a TBI. Less than 1% received substance abuse treatment. The low percentage of self-reported and recorded rate of substance abuse among VRS consumers who have a TBI suggests that substance abuse may be significantly under identified.
