Prevailing Forces: Recommending Progressive Community
Economic Development as a Response to Today's Work Crisis

by Steve Petingola

This paper discusses the influence of globalization and the neo-conservative context in Alberta on today's labour market and social programs. It demonstrates the impacts of these influential forces on the lives of marginalized people. Within a broader stream of entrepreneurial activities, progressive Community Economic Development (a strategy that aims to integrate social and economic needs) is offered in response to today's work crisis (a crisis fuelled largely by labour/economic restructuring of people in today's markets). Following a brief case study an analysis is provided to demonstrate the differences that exist between single entrepreneurial initiatives and progressive CED. Recommendations for groups and individuals who may want to implement components of progressive Community Economic Development will be put forward.
