Evaluation of a Performance Appraisal
Model Within a Vocational Services Program

by Lori-Anne Huebner

Performance appraisals are an important aspect of any company. Although there is no model of appraisal that is viewed as optimal for implementation within a rehabilitation organization, the importance of having a model in place is widely accepted. The Balanced Scorecard is a popular performance appraisal model used extensively within the corporate world. Its appropriateness for use within rehabilitation settings is questioned. An evaluation was conducted on a vocational services program within a rehabilitation organization that presently utilizes the Balanced Scorecard model. This evaluation is discussed as a case study looking at the effects that the appraisal model has on service delivery and client program outcomes. The value that a qualitative analysis can add to an evaluation is also highlighted.
