Autism: Overcoming the Challenge with 'Island Connection'

by Noelle Baldwin

Autism is no longer considered a rare disorder and while there is no one effective treatment that can be applied to all, treatment options for autism expand almost daily. Autism and autism spectrum disorders are characterized by their diversity of symptomology and this makes both evaluation of program effectiveness and choice of appropriate programs for individual children highly problematic.

Generally, parents are introduced to isolated treatments with little attention given to the advantages of combining treatments to meet specific symptomology. This paper outlines treatment options for parents - especially parents of Autism Nova Scotia who are working in partnership with Nova Scotia Community College to create a program for young children with autism and a training program for staff.
